What is Employees State Insurance (ESI)?

Employees State Insurance (ESI) is the insurance scheme regulated by Employees’ State Insurance Corporation under the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948. ESI provides health security to the workforce.

Why Business Entities Should Register itself under Employees’ State Insurance (ESI)?

Registration under Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) is mandatory for an entity if such entity has 10 or more employees at any point in time. An entity cannot take registration on a voluntary basis if it has less than 10 employees. What is the contribution rate under ESI?

Employee’s Contribution: 0.75% of Gross Salary.

Employer’s Contribution: 3.25% of Gross Salary.

What is the eligibility of employee under ESI?

An employee having a gross salary not exceeding Rs. 21,000 (Rs. 25,000 in case of an employee with disability) is eligible to get the benefit of ESI.

  • Scanned Copy of PAN Card of Proprietor / Partners of Firm / Directors of Company / Secretary or Chief Executive of Society / Karta of HUF (as the case may be).
  • Scanned Copy of Aadhar Card of Proprietor / Partners of Firm / Directors of Company / Secretary or Chief Executive of Trust / Karta of HUF (as the case may be).
  • Passport Size photos of Proprietor / Partners of Firm / Directors of Company Secretary or Chief Executive of Trust / Karta of HUF (as the case may be).
  • Scanned Copy of PAN Card of Firm / Company / Society / Trust / HUF (if the applicant is Firm or Company or Society or Trust or HUF).
  • Sale Deed / Convenance Deed / Rent Agreement (if business place on rent) as address proof of place of business.
  • Utility Bill i.e., Electricity Bill / Property Tax Receipt / Water Bill (anyone) as proof of ownership of the place.
  • Constitution of Business i.e., Partnership Deed / Certificate of Incorporation and Agreement of LLP / MOA & AOA and Certificate of Incorporation of Company / Registration Certificate of the Society / Copy of the Trust Deed (as the case me be).
  • Area of business activities.
  • Contact Details (mobile number and email ID of Proprietor / Partners / Directors / Secretary or Chief Executive of Society / Karta of HUF (as the case me be).
  • Contact details of business / Firm / LLP / LLP / Company / Society / HUF.
  • Number of workers employed.

  • Details of current salary and wages of employees and workers.

Note: Mobile number should link with Aadhar Card to authenticate the submission of application in case of Proprietorship/Individual employer. If the mobile number is not linked with Aadhar Card then the authentication process will do through DSC. In the case of an employer other than Proprietorship/Individual, DSC is mandatory.

How many days it takes to complete the process of ESI Registration?

Department usually takes 5 to 7 working days (excluding Saturday, Sunday, and Gazetted holidays), its subject to the processing of the application by the department.

Ans. ESI registration is valid forever unless the employer surrenders the ESI registration in case of cessation of business.

Ans. No, renewal of ESI registration is not required once the ESI department allots the ESI code.
